Porcupine Mountains Backpacking Itinerary
Caring ... Honesty ... Respect ... Responsibility

Trip Departure Information
Trippers typically take the bus to camp, departing from the McGaw YMCA in Evanston. Bus transportation is assumed, and included in the camp fee. Parents also have the option to drop their tripper directly at Camp Echo on that same day. Upon arrival at camp, trippers meet the Health Officer for a health check and complete a swim evaluation. The remainder of the group's time at camp is spent teambuilding, preparing for trip departure, and practicing skills necessary for the trip.

We begin all our summer trips at Echo for several reasons. We have a fully-stocked Trip Center at Echo, with all the food and group gear for each trip; campers and their guides participate in the process of "packing out" for the trip. Most trip groups will use one of Echo's high or low challenge courses to build a cohesive spirit and to come together as a working team. There's also the fun of simply being at Echo, the enjoyment of an opening campfire, the camaraderie of spending some time with the other teen groups, and the excitement of bidding farewell to all the younger campers.

Trip Itinerary
Day 1
Trippers arrive at Camp Echo and are greeted by their trip guides. During the afternoon, they complete camp check-in procedures including meeting with the Health Officer and completing a swim evaluation. Once check-ins are complete, the group will get to know one another and begin building a cohesive team through initiatives.

Day 2
Trippers continue their in-camp training and preparations throughout the day. They will pack out all necessary gear and food as well as review the maps and itinerary for the trip. The group will also continue with teambuilding activities and complete a short training hike.

Day 3
The group completes the final preparations for trip departure. After a hearty lunch at Camp Echo, trippers load the van and head to their campsite at Ludington State Park.

Day 4
Trippers catch the morning ferry and embark on the four-hour ride across Lake Michigan to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Upon arrival, they eagerly set off on the final leg of their drive to the Porcupine Mountains. In the late afternoon, trippers check in at the Porcupine Mountains Visitor Center, and the group has just enough time for a short hike into the mountains before choosing their campsite.

Days 5-11
Trippers eagerly wake up for a filling breakfast and set off on their first full day of hiking.

For the next seven days, the group can choose their route and stopping places as they navigate over beautiful mountains. With an extensive trail system for hiking, trippers will traverse through thick green forests and climb to breathtaking vistas. There are more than 60 waterfalls and wildlife abounds in the park, including whitetail deer and midwest black bear. No matter where they choose hike, trippers will be amazed by this stunning wilderness environment.

Day 12
After a short final morning hike, the group leaves the beauty of the Porcupine Mountains behind. Once all gear is packed into the van, they begin the drive back to the McGaw YMCA in Evanston, IL.

Day 13
Trippers complete the drive to Evanston and arrive at approximately the same time as the busses coming from Camp Echo.
