Pacific Northwest Adventure Itinerary
Caring ... Honesty ... Respect ... Responsibility

Trip Departure Information
Trippers typically take the bus to camp, departing from the McGaw YMCA in Evanston. Bus transportation is assumed, and included in the camp fee. Parents also have the option to drop their tripper directly at Camp Echo on that same day. Upon arrival at camp, trippers meet the Health Officer for a health check and complete a swim evaluation. The remainder of the group's time at camp is spent teambuilding, preparing for trip departure, and practicing skills necessary for the trip.

We begin all our summer trips at Echo for several reasons. We have a fully-stocked Trip Center at Echo, with all the food and group gear for each trip; campers and their guides participate in the process of "packing out" for the trip. Most trip groups will use one of Echo's high or low challenge courses to build a cohesive spirit and to come together as a working team. There's also the fun of simply being at Echo, the enjoyment of an opening campfire, the camaraderie of spending some time with the other teen groups, and the excitement of bidding farewell to all the younger campers.

Trip Itinerary
Day 1
Trippers arrive at Camp Echo and are greeted by their trip guides. During the afternoon, they complete camp check-in procedures including meeting with the Health Officer and a swim evaluation. Once check-ins are complete, the group will get to know one another and begin building a cohesive team through initiatives and an unloaded (without packs) hike.

Day 2
Trippers continue their in-camp training and preparations throughout the day. They will pack out all necessary gear and food as well as review the maps and itinerary for the trip. The group will also take a short loaded (with packs) hike and continue teambuilding activities.

Day 3
In the early morning, the group departs for Midway airport with plenty of time to check in and get to the gate. After the flight to Seattle, trippers pick up their luggage, drive to North Cascades National Park and camp for the night.

Days 4-15
Trippers wake up early and eat a filling breakfast before embarking on their 12-day hiking adventure. After packing up camp, the group hits the trail ready to experience all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. While hiking, the group sees amazing sights including old growth forests, glaciers, mountain passes, and alpine lakes. Within the 12 days of travel, trippers have two layover days, allowing them to leave thier large packs at the campsite and explore. Each day, the group will hike on average seven hours per day with plenty of breaks for lunch, water, and snacks.

Day 16
Trippers complete the last leg of hiking and leave North Cascades National Park as seasoned hikers with many wonderful memories. The group packs up the van and crosses the border into Vancouver, Canada. Trippers spend the night at a campsite in Vancouver celebrating their hiking accomplishments and planning for their kayaking adventure.

Day 17
After an early breakfast and loading the van, the group boards a ferry and then drives to Powell River. Upon arrival, trippers are greeted by Powell River Sea Kayak Center staff members. During a half-day lesson, Powell River Sea Kayak staff members teach trippers paddling techniques, sea kayak safety, and rescue techniques. After trippers feel comfortable operating their kayaks, the group spends the night at a campsite and eagerly awaits the next morning.

Days 18-25
For the next eight days, trippers kayak the beautiful Desolation Sound. The group explores bays, inlets, waterfalls, and islands along the coast. Distances traveled each day vary depending on weather conditions, tides, and the abilities of the group. The flexible paddling pace allows the group to take in the scenery, converse with others, and reflect on the bay's remote beauty.

Day 26
After a kayaking a short distance, the group pulls out of the water and returns their gear to the Powell River Sea Kayak Center. Once the van is packed up, they drive a short distance to a nearby campsite and stay there for the night.

Day 27
Trippers finish the drive to Vanouver. Once they arrive, there is plenty of time to shower, clean up, and celebrate by enjoying this beautiful city!

Day 28
The final leg of the drive is completed when the group arrives in Seattle, WA with plenty of time to catch their afternoon flight to Chicago.

Trip itineraries are subject to change.
