Teen Leadership and Development
|
Camp Echo's philosophy and programming takes on a new dimension for high school participants, by placing a greater emphasis on leadership development.
Teens are given more freedom and have increased responsibilities, allowing them to practice appropriate decision-making and continue to build self-esteem.
Camp lays out expectations for each program prior to and during arrival at camp, and we hold each participant to a high standard.
Long-time Echo parents should realize that teen programs offer a new environment that is different from the Main Camp program they know so well.
Camp Echo also believes in the power of a teen attending camp the summer before entering high school.
We see strength in that:
- they have the opportunity to make friends before actually getting to high school.
- it gives them consistency in a time of transition.
- our programs are fun, which can help alleviate some of the anxiety.
- they will meet both older high school students and staff recently graduated who can talk to them about this new experience.
Leadership training is an integral part of all Camp Echo teen programs.
Trip participants can expect to enhance leadership skills in ways similar to participants in Camp Echo's L.I.T. and C.I.T. programs.
All participants entering tenth grade or higher receive a written evaluation at the conclusion of their program.
Evaluations are shared directly with the participant and then kept on file in the camp office;
they provide helpful information when teen participants later apply to work as camp counselors.
We believe this process of evaluative feedback provides a valuable growth opportunity for older teen program participants.
