Georgian Bay Sea Kayak Trip Itinerary
Caring ... Honesty ... Respect ... Responsibility
Trip Departure Information
|
Trippers typically take the bus to camp, departing from the McGaw YMCA in Evanston.
Bus transportation is assumed, and included in the camp fee.
Parents also have the option to drop their tripper directly at Camp Echo on that same day.
Upon arrival at camp, trippers meet the Health Officer for a health check and complete a swim evaluation.
The remainder of the group's time at camp is spent teambuilding, preparing for trip departure,
and practicing skills necessary for the trip.
We begin all our summer trips at Echo for several reasons.
We have a fully-stocked Trip Center at Echo, with all the food and group gear for each trip; campers and their guides participate in the process of "packing out" for the trip.
Most trip groups will use one of Echo's high or low challenge courses to build a cohesive spirit and to come together as a working team.
There's also the fun of simply being at Echo, the enjoyment of an opening campfire, the camaraderie of spending some time with the other teen groups, and the excitement of bidding farewell to all the younger campers.
Day 1
| |
Trippers arrive at Camp Echo and are greeted by their trip guides.
During the afternoon, they will complete camp check-in procedures including meeting with the Health Officer and completing a swim evaluation.
Once check-ins are complete, the group will get to know eachother and begin building a cohesive team through initiatives.
|
Day 2
| |
Trippers continue their in-camp training and preparations throughout the day.
They pack out all necessary gear and food as well as review the maps and itinerary for the trip.
The group also continues with teambuilding activities and may practice basic kayaking skills.
|
Day 3
| |
The group departs early in the morning for Killbear Provincial Park in Noble, Ontario.
Even though the drive is long, the trippers and guides are excited and eagerly await the adventures that are to come.
Typically, the group stops in Parry Sound for a hearty dinner before continuing on to their campsite.
|
Day 4
| |
Trippers spend the day practicing their sea kayaking skills with the White Squall trainers.
The day is filled with skillbuilding and laughs as everyone learns how to safely operate their two-person sea kayaks.
Everyone returns to the campsite Killbear Provincial Park for dinner and a breathtaking sunset, concluded by a great Taps Talk on the beach (weather permitting).
|
Day 5
| |
The group takes a two-hour shuttle to the put-in at Chikanishing Creek, and the sea kayaking adventure begins!
Trippers kayak around gorgeous islands and calm waters before choosing an island to camp on for the night.
|
Day 6
| |
Trippers set out on their first full day of kayaking (about 23 km).
Throughout the day, they enjoy island views and are challenged to maneuver through closely-set rocks.
When they reach Hen Island, they are ready for dinner and a good night's sleep.
|
Day 7
| |
The group will hug the coast throughout the day's paddle.
Everyone keeps an eye out for good jumping rocks from which they can enjoy a invigorating swim.
After they arrive at Bottle Island to camp for the night, trippers have time to hone their paddling skills and practice assisted Eskimo rescues before the sun sets.
|
Day 8
| |
From Bottle Island, the group paddles to Tanvat Island.
Throughout the day, they search for good jumping spots and enjoy the beautiful waters.
|
Day 9
| |
The group begins to paddle East to camp on a group of island called the Churchills.
There are many great islands at which to stop for snacks, lunch, and quick dip before choosing from an abundance of camping sites in the Churchhills.
|
Day 10
| |
Trippers are now seasoned sea kayakers and spend their last day easily traversing the waters from the Churchills to Doctor Oil Islands.
They know they are nearing the end of the day's travel as an abundance of lighthouses begin to appear.
|
Day 11
| |
The group completes a short paddle to the pull-out site where White Squall staff members happily greet them.
After checking in their gear, trippers load into the van and begin their trek back to Camp Echo.
A stop in Toronto for a good meal, a movie, and maybe even a baseball game allows the group to relax before reaching their campsite on Bronte Creek.
|
Day 12
| |
The final leg of the drive back to Camp Echo is completed, and the group arrives just before dinner.
They spend the evening unpacking gear, relishing in their accomplishments, and reflecting on the incredible beauty of Georgian Bay.
|
Day 13
