Boys Trailblazers Itinerary
Caring ... Honesty ... Respect ... Responsibility
Trip Departure Information
|
Trippers typically take the bus to camp, departing from the McGaw YMCA in Evanston.
Bus transportation is assumed, and included in the camp fee.
Parents also have the option to drop their tripper directly at Camp Echo on that same day.
Upon arrival at camp, trippers meet the Health Officer for a health check and complete a swim evaluation.
The remainder of the group's time at camp is spent teambuilding, preparing for trip departure,
and practicing skills necessary for the trip.
We begin all our summer trips at Echo for several reasons.
We have a fully-stocked Trip Center at Echo, with all the food and group gear for each trip; campers and their guides participate in the process of "packing out" for the trip.
Most trip groups will use one of Echo's high or low challenge courses to build a cohesive spirit and to come together as a working team.
There's also the fun of simply being at Echo, the enjoyment of an opening campfire, the camaraderie of spending some time with the other teen groups, and the excitement of bidding farewell to all the younger campers.
Day 1
| |
Trippers arrive at Camp Echo and are greeted by their trip guides.
During the afternoon, they will complete camp check-in procedures including meeting with the Health Officer and completing a swim evaluation.
Once check-ins are complete, the group will get to know one another and begin building a cohesive team through initiatives and an unloaded (without packs) hike.
|
Day 2
| |
Trippers continue their in-camp training, learning basic hiking and camping skills.
The group will also take a short loaded (with packs) hike and continue teambuilding activities.
|
Day 3
| |
Trippers complete their final day of in-camp training and prepare for their trip throughout the day.
They will pack out all necessary gear and food as well as review the maps and itinerary for the trip.
The group will also take a short loaded (with packs) hike and continue with more teambuilding activities.
|
Day 4
| |
Trippers leave directly after breakfast and drive to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to canoe on the Big Two Hearted River.
Although the van ride is a long one (about 7 hours), the energy is very high in anticipation of the next three day's adventures.
|
Day 5
| |
Trippers set out for their first day of paddling on the river.
They practice basic and advanced paddle strokes as they maneuver around log jams as well as complete a short portage.
When they reach Lone Pine campsite, everyone is ready for a great meal and a good night's sleep.
|
Day 6
| |
Trippers canoe from Lone Pine to Reed + Green campsite.
As the group travels with the river current, they experience beautiful scenery that showcases steep cliffs and forests.
|
Day 7
| |
Trailblazers complete their final day of canoeing over swift-moving water.
Plenty of sandbars and dunes allow the group to pause for relaxing breaks before they reach the take out point and camp for the night.
|
Day 8
| |
Trippers have a layover day to recharge before beginning the hiking portion of the trip.
The group will swim, climb sand dunes, and share stories of their canoeing adventures.
|
Day 9
| |
After a day of rest and relaxation, trippers are ready to begin the three-day hiking section of the trip.
On their first day they stay near lake Michigan, traversing across a beautiful bridge and many sand dunes.
|
Day 10
| |
The group continues on their hike, spending the majority of the day away from the lake.
This full day of hiking allows them to continue to practice newly-learned skills and build endurance.
|
Day 11
| |
Trippers get up early to complete their final day of hiking.
By now, they are able to easily traverse across bridge and sand dunes to reach the van in late afternoon.
Once settled into the van, the group travels to Petosky State Park to spend the night.
|
Day 12
| |
The group is able to sleep in a slightly and continue on the trip back to Camp Echo, arriving just before lunch.
Everyone spends the afternoon unpacking and sharing the triumphs of their trip.
|
Day 13
| |
Trippers pack up, say goodbye to their counselors, and take the bus to the McGaw YMCA in Evanston, IL.
