Aquatic Policy
Caring ... Honesty ... Respect ... Responsibility
Campers spend most of their time on Echo's peninsula, surrounded by water, and many activities are water-based.
As a YMCA camp located on a lake, we have long advocated that everyone learn to swim.
Our swim instructors help every camper become a more competent swimmer.
Upon arrival, campers complete a swim evaluation that classifies them as red, white, or blue swimmers.
Campers complete the swim evaluation with their cabin group.
Certified lifeguards ensure the safety of all swimmers during the evaluation.
At least one counselor (who is often a lifeguard) swims with and encourages the campers during the swim evaluation.
To qualify as a blue (advanced) swimmer, one must swim six lengths of the swim area (about 200 yards) and tread water for ten minutes.
White (intermediate) swimmers must swim four lengths of the swim area (about 120 yards) and tread water for five mintues.
Red is our beginner swim classification.
Campers who choose not to undergo the swim evaluation are classified as red swimmers.
Red, and white swimmers and blue swimmers who need stroke improvement (blue circle), are assigned to swim lessons as one of their Camptivities.
If campers would to change their swim classification, they have the option to try the swim evaluation again on the first Monday of the session and at least twice more later in the session.
All campers can participate in some aquatic activities no matter what their swim color.
The swimming area has different sections for each type of swimmer.
The red area is a shallow section that is no more than four feet deep, the white area is no more than 5 feet deep, the blue area is our deepest section and has a barge from which campers can jump.
Campers are welcome to swim in any area that is below or at their swim color.
Campers who are blue swimmers may also water ski and sail.
Blue and white swimmers may kayak and canoe.
Red swimmers may go out in a canoe, rowboat, or ski boat with a lifeguard-certified staff member.
Everyone wears a PFD (lifejacket) while water skiing or in any boat.

Swim Lesson Policy for Voyagers and Explorers
|
Explorers and Voyagers who are classified as red or white swimmers have the option to attend swim lessons as one of their Camptivities.
With the guidance and support of our swim instructors, participants often move up at least one swim level within a week.
With this advancement, they gain self-confidence and are able to experience the many aquatic activities our facilities have to offer.
